Stepping into Light

STEPPING INTO LIGHT

Here.

in these redwood mountains, you can walk

walk through thick forests. enveloped in cold and darkness

Breathe deeply. inhale the scent of the ferns

chilled.

shivering.

just when the cold sneaks in. it’s fingers gently grasping so deep that you fear it won’t leave your bones

you see

beams of light filter down from the immense treetops

Beams of beautiful light that you can step into.

step into

It’s not enough to completely penetrate the darkness

but

you can rest there…

breathe there for awhile…

resting in the light…

then walk through the darkness again, knowing that the strength of the sun is so strong and resilient that it will always, always, filter through.

always

filter through.

you walk through the dark woods

you walk.

you pause.

you look up from your feet.

up

up

up

and all around you.

the trees have encircled you. their tall bodies stretching, reaching, touching the light sky. their underground limbs, hands, and fingers, joined together. holding fast.

you pause

completely open to the sun

no darkness looms above you

just warmth

and light.
