Excerpt #5 from The Death and Adventures of Jackie: Prologue/Epilogue

What have I learned from the space between, from living within the margins?

I have learned that we do not go up, we go Out.

Out into and of everything all around us. We still communicate, without the restrictions and limitations of flesh and bone and cells and tissue. We communicate in a pure state of non physical being. The relationship with the living is new. As in every relationship, reaching out goes both ways. Create space for conversation and reaching through to happen. Get rid of daily distraction from time to time. Play music, sit in silence, walk near the boundaries of the world…on a mountaintop, near the ocean, when moments of contact occur, don’t chalk them up to coincidence. The more you notice, the more they happen. We love to be seen and heard, even after death. Take the time to get to know each other. It is a period of rebirth. The beloved dead are all around us. This is what my mother tells me. This is what the dead are saying to us:

We can be found in a wind blowing and gently moving our hair out of our eyes.

We can be found in dolphins swimming playfully near shore, hovering nearby.

We can be found in the wind chimes.

We can be found in a sea shell that gets deposited near our toes.

We can be found in the pages of books.

We can be found in a similar stranger.

We can be found in a song.

We can be found in a dance.

We can be found in those moments before we fall asleep.

We can be found in those moments before waking.

We can be found in the words of a child.

We can be found in fairytales.

We can be found in conversations around the fire.

We can be found in a shared meal and a drink with friends.

We can be found in the whirlwind.

Talk about us. Talk about our lives. Talk about our deaths. Invite us to your conversations. Invite us to your table. Share a meal and a drink with us.

There are signs of us everywhere.

What does my mother say to me? What of our beloved dead?

Simply…We are right here. We are just fine. And we love you, very, very much.

  1. That’s beautiful Amber. “We can be found in a similar stranger” This happens to me a lot! In the parking lot of Whole Foods, I see Josh and then I remember. I go to wave to Storm and realize its not here. I see Mom too, especially from the back. I once followed a lady around in Safeway (from a distance so I wasn’t too creepy) because she looked so much like Mom from the back that I just wanted to indulge in a fantasy.
